Oops, I'm Sorry – lyrics

The chorus is sung after each verse and again at the end.

Verse 1

Mouse built a tower, so tall and so grand,
Block after block with his own little hand.
Ruby came dancing and twirled round the floor,
Bump! went the tower, it's tumbled once more!

Chorus

Oops, I'm sorry! Are you okay?
Oops, I'm sorry! Let's fix it today!
Say it and mean it, then lend a hand,
Sorry helps friends understand!

Verse 2

Mouse had a sniffle, a tear in his eye,
Ruby knelt down and she gave a big sigh.
"I didn't mean it, I'm sorry, my friend,
Let's build it together, right up to the end!"

Bridge

One block, two blocks, three blocks high,
Four blocks, five blocks, up to the sky!
Mouse gives a smile and a great big cheer,
"That's okay, Ruby! I'm glad you're here!"

  1. Practise with toysBuild a block tower with your child, knock it over on purpose, and walk through the three sorry steps together. Then swap roles.
  2. Keep it calmChildren apologise more easily when they do not feel ashamed. Sing the chorus softly rather than demanding "say sorry!"
  3. Model it yourselfWhen you bump into your child or forget something, say "Oops, I'm sorry! Are you okay?" Children copy what they see.
  4. Count the blocks in the bridgeThe bridge counts from one to five blocks. Count on your fingers or stack real blocks as you sing.

Questions parents ask

How do you teach a toddler to say sorry?

Keep it short and calm: name what happened, say "I'm sorry" together, ask if the other child is okay, and help fix it. Songs like this one let children practise the words when nobody is upset.

Is there a French version?

Yes. « Oups, pardon ! » tells the same story in French.

What age is this song for?

Children aged 2 to 6. The three steps are simple enough for toddlers and still useful for 5 and 6 year olds.
